The Hana Lava Tube
Published On: Oct 26, 2006

If you are visiting Maui, Hawaii and would like to see nature at her finest, be sure to include the Hana Lava Tube in your itinerary.

The Hana Lave Tube, also known as Ka' eleku Caverns, is truly a site to behold. The cave is open for exploring from 10:30 until 3:30 six days a week for self-guided tours. Admission is $11.95 per person, with children five and under free.

The Hana Lava Tube will take about forty minutes to tour with virtually no wait time, meaning tourists can enjoy seeing one of Maui's premier sites without losing a day on the beach. Or, should a day of rain emerge, the whole family can enjoy an entertaining afternoon at the Hana Lava Tube.

When you are on the self-guided tour, you will notice frequent interpretive signs posted that will inform you of all the scientific sites you are taking in. You will no doubt stand in awe when you see the beams of light shining into the darkness of the cave.

There are many photo opportunities in the Hana Lava Tube in Maui, Hawaii. The natural formations and delighted faces of your loved ones will provide ample opportunity for capturing many memories.

While you are in the Hana Lave Tube, you will be able to get a first-hand look at stalactite and stalagmite formations most only have the opportunity to see in books.

The stalactite formations are reminiscent of running lava and have a pearlized affect. The stalagmites, on the other hand, are much rougher looking and seem to just pile from the ground to the ceiling of the cave.

The air inside the Hana Lava Tube is amazingly fresh and the temperatures are always nice and warm rather than the damp cold most caves are known for. Older people who may frequently feel cold will enjoy the relative warmth of this cave.

Even better, the Hana Lava Tube is not home to one bat or mosquito, making it an ideal tourist location for both young and old alike. The trail is made of cinders and well marked paths.

In addition, there is a handrail for security as you traverse the cavern's path. However, those without a descent measure of physical fitness should skip this attraction for safety reasons and perhaps walk the above-ground maze.

Once you have had the opportunity to explore the Hana Lava Tube in Maui, you can enjoy eating a picnic lunch on the beautiful above-ground property. A tidy picnic shelter sits on a grassy lawn surrounded by lush pink flowers, bright blue skies, and a magnificent mountain view.

As mentioned, if you are traveling with someone who is unable to go into the cave, there is another option that is breathtaking. The Red Ti Botanical Garden Maze at the Hana Lave Tube is purely original in nature and is perfect for some quiet relaxation.

The Hana Lava Tube, or Ka'eleku Cavern is perfect for a morning or afternoon break from other tourist attractions on Maui, Hawaii. Anyone ranging from young child to older adult will enjoy this magnificent attraction and will be eager to come back should time permit.
