Old Lahaina Luau
Published On: Oct 26, 2006

When in Maui, Hawaii, an absolute must see is the multi-award winning Old Lahaina Luau. This luau tells the story of the Hawaiian people and so much more.

When guests of the Old Lahaina Luau arrive, they will notice the sumptuous aroma of roasting pork that emanates from an underground oven as they are warmly greeted and given a lei.

Then, guests move to the eating house where they begin their meal with some outstanding tropical beverages and a delicious Hawaiian meal.

The Hawaiian meal at the Old Lahaina Luau are treated to chicken, pork, steak, and seafood cooked in a variety of ways that will please every palette. Tradition poi, big island sweet potatoes, stir fry vegetables, rolls, and desserts are among some of the other many offerings.

At sunset, the drama of the Hawaiian story begins to unfold as hula dancers take the stage to tell their story.

The show begins with depictions of the very first Polynesian settlers landing on the Hawaiian islands. Viewers also have a chance to understand the "hula" from its inception at migration and development into the more modern form that still exits today.

The hula began as a means of communicating with the gods worshipped by the Hawaiian people. In its purest form, it is performed with accompanying chanting.

When missionaries came to Hawaii to "tame the heathens," hula endured. It became a means of celebration and lauded King Kalakaua.

The traditional hula of the olden days began to change with the times. The influx of immigrants and increasing tourism industry took its toll on the dance and it succumbed to change.

However, the hula is still a lovely, elegant dance that encourages performers to communicate through gestures, eye movement, and hand placement.

In addition to enjoying historical dances, the guests of the Old Lahaina Luau will be able to view native island crafts and watch them being made.

Obviously, the Old Lahaina Luau is truly an amazing experience and is very popular. Those wishing to attend this festive evening need to make reservations well in advance of their trip to Maui.

When making your reservations, there are two seating options available. For those wishing to have the full authentic Hawaiian experience, there is the traditional Hawaiian mat seating. However, there are standard dining table and chairs for those who care for or need this comfort.

The Old Lahaina Luau in Maui plays seven nights a week. Guests begin arriving at 5:15 or 5:45 depending on the season.

Because of the high quality of the show and dinner, the Old Lahaina Luau is $92.71 (including tax) for adults and $61.46 for children twelve and under. Even though this expense may seem a little pricey, it is well worth every penny.

It is hard to imagine a more suitable way to spend an evening than at the Old Lahaina Luau in Maui. You will be in the presence of true Hawaiian culture and history. The food, crafts, music, and hula dancing combine to create an enchanting evening where the past meets the present and all sit in awe of the magic that is Hawaii.
